Immemorial

The silence of this ancient forest had a weight to it. A feeling of oppressive power containing old memory and forgotten secrets. The hood and cloak that surrounded Eska’s body, dampened the crunch of his walking and heightened the sound of his breathing. It felt as if he was underwater with the great structures of a lost civilization rearing up around him. Faint glimpses of sunlight glimmering through the trees increased the sense of submersion. He had come here in search of new tech to bring back to his colony.

The increasing need for new materials had forced the scavengers to forage deeper and deeper into unplotted territory. At the last outpost Eska heard  rumours of a massive untouched scavenge hidden deep within the northwest zone. Remembering the slightly crazed glint in the eyes of the elderly bio-scrapper who told him this rumour, Eska began to have doubts of the scavenges existence. Just as his doubt was about to overcome his resolve, he glimpsed a slit of light in the treeline ahead. His head swimming Eska quickened his pace, leaving the darkness behind.

A flash of brightness stung his eyes as he came upon a scene of breathtaking magnitude. A great valley stretched out before him with rivers glinting in the golden mid afternoon light. But what caught Eska’s eye was not the beauty of the valley but the towering monolith that dominated the scene before him. This great edifice was a relic of the Ancient’s once great civilization.

The immense apparatus that loomed over Eska were hypothesized to be refineries for the biosteel used in the creation of the Ancient’s devices. Curving into the center was the enigmatic spiral known as the “Spiralis.” The spiralis was the energy source of these antediluvian machines and the secret that died with the Ancients. Many of the Ancient’s machines purpose were unknown to Eska’s people.

These once powerful mechanisms now rest as lifeless shells, picked apart by those who remain.
